Steps to Avoid Moving Company Scams And Fraud

Visit the physical location of the moving company before you consider using them. Use your instincts to see how professional the company is.

Verify the moving company’s license. All moving companies are required by law to demonstrate their legitimacy on all their documentation.

Verify the license number with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) or the California Moving & Storage Association (CMSA).

Obtain written estimates for a move that consists of three or more rooms. Legitimate movers are very price competitive. Make sure the estimates are based on the same factors.

Illegal movers could charge by the cubic foot. Legal movers charge by the hour and by weight/mileage.

Visit California Moving and Storage Association Before Picking A Mover

The California Moving and Storage Association (CMSA) is a non-profit trade association and has a website that represents over 300 insured and licensed movers operating in California. CMSA is a great resource for finding out the best practices and procedures for professional movers in California.
They Offer helpful information you should ask the mover and information you should find out before moving such as:

Find prospective movers in your area
Carrier/Mover Liability
Not to Exceed Price:
Evaluate Service Presentations:
Visit the Mover:

CMSA is a huge resource if you need information about your potential mover. If you have a potential move it is a good idea to visit before picking a moving company.

Protecting Yourself From Illegal Movers

California’s storage and moving industry are experiencing a large volume of commercial and residential moves. Unfortunately, the very circumstances that have spurred commercial and residential moves have also ignited a rash of illegal movers.

According to the California Moving & Storage Association (CMSA), they are getting a higher number of call on their consumer information line. A high percentage of the calls are from victims of illegal movers. Illegal movers appear to be legitimate online but, in fact, quote below market value prices and engage in unlawful practices. The CMSA offers cost-free services and information to assist consumers in choosing a reputable mover.

According to the CMSA, consumers are subject to possible fraud if they book a move online or on the phone without doing their research. CMSA suggests 2 strategies to validate the legitimacy of a company: Verify the license number with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) or visit the physical location of the company.

CMSA members are profiled alphabetically and by county on its website. Members are licensed and maintain workers’ compensation insurance and professional liability insurance. Members also provide training for their staff to ensure a professional move, maintain clean equipment and moving vans, and adhere to a strict professional code of conduct.

Top 20 Moving Companies: Are They Legit?

While researching for a presentation, I looked up the Top 20 Moving Companies listed on Yelp. I started checking out their websites and whether they were licensed or not. What I discovered may surprise some of you. Out of the top 20 moving companies listed on Yelp, 45% are unlicensed and two are Brokers.

Unfortunately, too many consumers think that if a moving company is listed on Yelp the company is legitimate and licensed, however, this is not the case even with the top 20 moving companies. Yelp does not check to make sure any company is is licensed, operating legally, is insured, or other industry related requirements.

I didn’t go through and check other industries on Yelp but if this is the case with the top 20 moving companies,  I’m confident you will find the same issue if you search for general contractors, plumbers, and other service industries. This is scary because so many people rely on Yelp to make buying decisions.

Yelp and other online review sites are good to check and can be an excellent resource, but you should not rely solely on that when making a decision. As a consumer, you should check out other sources to make sure the top 20 moving companies you are choosing from are licensed and insured. In this case, checking out the top 20 moving companies operating in California, listed on Yelp, is pretty easy.  Follow the steps below and it could save you a lot of heartache and cash.

Start by going to the Public Utilities Commission website. Next, click on “List of Companies” and from there click on “Moving Company (MTR).” Enter the name of the company. If more than one is found you will have to figure out which one is the one you are looking for, usually based on address. Check to see if their permit is active and if their insurance is valid. It is important to keep in mind that there are different companies with the same name within California. You are able to narrow your search to counties.

A broker is a middleman between the person who is moving and the moving company. Brokers are not actual movers and don’t own trucks or equipment. They are essentially salespeople selling the move to any company willing to pay them. This is NOT who you want to book your move through. Doing this means you will have no control over who the company is that shows up at your home. You won’t even know whether they are licensed and insured. This is a potential recipe for disaster. You really want to hire a brick and mortar business.

Whatever you do, always remember “you get what you pay for.” So do not choose a from the top 20 moving companies simply based on price. In the end, what you thought was a bargain may turn out to be more expensive than you ever imaged.

Home Moving: Fragrances – Part 1

An Unexpected Home Moving Productivity Tool

Home Moving can be stressful for the entire family. It doesn’t matter what your situation. Single or have children. Have a three thousand square foot home or one-bedroom apartment. Moving across town or over to the next county. Sometimes all the excitement and build up you feel prior to a move can vanish into anxiety, exhaustion and overwhelm.

Besides getting organized and planning your home moving project, what else can you do to support yourself? Why not include some pleasant fragrances in your environment? It can make the moving process (move prep, packing and unpacking) all little more enjoyable? You might even find yourself– and those who are helping you — with more energy, increased productivity, and an improved mood!

When enjoying my home or office environment, I know that lighting a scented candle or plugging in an automatic air freshener can help me relax. My mother told me that one of her tricks to welcome my father home at night after a hard day’s work was to brown onions and garlic on the stove. It didn’t matter what was for dinner! The smell immediately offered a calming, relaxing effect.

The Science Behind Fragrance & Mood

If you think this sounds manipulative, well, I guess you’d be right. In fact, scientific and market studies show that humans are extremely malleable when it comes to fragrance. The International Flavors & Fragrances  Inc. (IFF) is dedicated to researching fragrance trends and consumer insights. For example, a company changed only the fragrance ingredient of a shampoo. Consumers who tested the shampoo claimed that it was far superior in every category (gentler, better rinsing, shinier hair, etc.). Companies regularly spray scents into the air to help achieve certain moods and productivity standards.

Home Moving & Fragrance

So, do you want a happy move, a happy family, happy kids and productive helpers? Maybe some pumpkin pie scent would help. There’s no harm in adding a little spice to the atmosphere! Important Note: we do not encourage using candles or other fragrances requiring a flame during a home move. We suggest using plug-in diffusers or sprays. There are many natural sprays that do not use aerosols, if that concerns you.
